Barbie’s Evolution in Animated Films
Clara’s Transformation in “Nutcracker”
In the initial script of “Nutcracker,” Barbie was portrayed as Clara, a character who stumbled while carrying a tray but managed to prevent any spillage. However, a meeting between the film’s producers and representatives from Mattel resulted in a change. According to Sheridan, the director, they believed that “Barbie would never stumble.”
Barbie’s Calm Confrontation
During the recording of the scene where Clara confronts the Mouse King, a Mattel representative requested that Barbie sound less angry. They explained that Barbie should always maintain her kind, clever, and brave persona, even when facing a villain.
Loosening the Reins
As the franchise developed, the restrictions on Barbie’s character began to relax. In the 16th film, “Barbie and the Three Musketeers,” Barbie, now athletic and ambitious, engages in sword fights. The studio recognized that audiences wanted to relate to her more.
Showcasing More Silly Moments
By the mid-2010s, Barbie had traded her princess gowns for pants and embarked on career-focused adventures. She explored space, went on spy missions, and even designed video games. This shift allowed Barbie to showcase her silly and comedic side, providing more entertainment for viewers.
Modern Barbie’s Appeal
Purcy, a 22-year-old illustrator also known as Purcy on Instagram, has watched 33 of the Barbie films. Her favorites are those set in the modern day, particularly “Barbie: Princess Charm School.” Purcy believes that these films demonstrate that Barbie can be kind, caring, and love pink while remaining strong and standing up for herself.
