Federal opposition leader Angus Taylor has pledged “one of the biggest immigration cuts in Australian history.” Speaking to the NSW Liberal party state council in Sydney on Saturday, he attacked Labor’s governance. Taylor declared: “For the past four years, we’ve had a government in Canberra which is socialist in all but name.”
Taylor admitted his previous coalition government had its shortcomings. However, he insisted Labor was “utterly failing the nation,” according to reporting by Kat Wong. He also criticised Labor politicians for delivering speeches “in front of three different flags instead of our one national flag.” This referred to Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander flags often displayed alongside the national standard.
Labor recently unveiled its own new immigration plan. This includes transforming a former quarantine facility into a new detention centre. It also prevents international students from bringing family members to Australia. Yet Taylor offered to go further, stating definitively: “I will deliver one of the biggest cuts to immigration in Australian history.”
The opposition leader extended his pledges to cultural touchstones. He promised to protect Australia’s national flag and Australia Day. Furthermore, he vowed to change laws regarding gender. Taylor asserted: “We will not allow the ideologues and activists to deny the truth … Under a Coalition government I lead, we will end this lunacy.”
This hardline approach signals a clear strategy. The Coalition aims to win back voters from the populist One Nation party, particularly ahead of the critical NSW state election in March. Taylor’s speech paints a stark choice for Australian voters, framing the upcoming poll as a battle for the nation’s cultural and demographic future.
