London CNN — “The Prime Minister is not under a desk.” It said much about the state of Liz Truss’s troubled premiership that this statement by fellow Conservative minister Penny Mordaunt at the start of the week was made, ostensibly at least, as a show of support. CNN — The Russian-installed leaders in Ukraine’s Kherson region on Wednesday began massively ramping up the relocation of up to 60,000 people amid warnings over Russia’s ability to withstand a Ukrainian counter-offensive. Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of generating “hysteria” to compel people to leave. Residents in the city of Kherson began to receive text messages on Wednesday morning from the pro-Russian administration. “Dear residents,” it read. “Evacuate immediately. There will be shelling of residential areas by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. There will be buses from 7:00, from Rechport [River port] to the Left Bank.” Meanwhile on Wednesday, Russian…
Sharing high-resolution media online can unintentionally expose sensitive biometric data, according to a report released Tuesday by a cybersecurity company. That can be particularly dangerous, the 75-page report by Trend Micro noted, because people don’t know that they’re exposing the information. The report cited, as an example, the #EyeMakeup hashtag on Instagram, which has nearly 10 million posts, and #EyeChallenge on TikTok, with more than two billion views, exposing iris patterns good enough to pass iris scanners. “By publicly sharing certain kinds of content on social media, we give malicious actors the opportunity to source our biometrics,” the report explained.…
CNN — Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law Wednesday introducing martial law in four Ukrainian regions the Kremlin claims to have annexed, in violation of international law, along with a separate order imposing restrictions on movement in and out of eight Russian regions adjoining Ukraine. The regions are Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk. Russia does not control the entirety of those regions and is in a hasty retreat in Kherson after Ukrainian forces regained territory there. Ukraine’s foreign ministry has condemned the decree as a “new state of terror” aimed to “to suppress the resistance” of those regions’ residents.…
Ilya Ponomarev has long been a thorn in the side of Russian president Vladimir Putin. From leading street protests over his re-election in 2012 to being the only MP to oppose Moscow’s annexation of Crimea, Ponomarev’s position is clear.Only now it’s more extreme, a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.Exiled in Kyiv, the 47-year-old says he is a spokesman for the National Republican Army (NRA), an underground group that wants to violently overthrow the Russian leader. Among others, the NRA claims to be behind the car bomb that killed Darya Dugina, the daughter of ultra-nationalist Alexander Dugin.“Obviously, the end game is regime change in Russia,”…

VAT-free shopping in the UK is gone for good, it has been announced. It was scrapped after Brexit at the start of 2021 and then brought back. But the UK’s Chancellor has now confirmed it will not return. The perk made shopping in the country 20 per cent cheaper for international visitors. It allowed them to get a refund on value-added tax (VAT) on items bought in high street shops, at airports or at other departure points from the UK and exported in their own personal luggage. When the UK left the EU in 2021, then Chancellor Rishi Sunak ended tax-free shopping.…
A new automated insulin delivery system, described as a “bionic pancreas,” tracks a person’s blood glucose levels using a glucose monitor, then automatically delivers insulin when required using an insulin pump. This device replaces the need to test glucose levels using the existing standard of care, such as fingerstick blood testing, multiple daily insulin injections, or other automated pumps.A new research study in people with type 1 diabetes shows when tested against the existing standard of care, the bionic pancreas was found to be more effective at maintaining blood glucose (sugar) levels within normal ranges.People with type 1 diabetes need insulin…
After days of mounting international backlash, Josep Borrell, the European Union’s outspoken foreign policy chief, has apologised for his controversial remarks in which he described Europe as an idyllic “garden” of prosperity and the rest of the world as mostly a “jungle.””Some have misinterpreted the metaphor as ‘colonial Euro-centrism’,” Borrell wrote in a blog post on Tuesday evening. “I am sorry if some have felt offended.”But he did not reject the figure of speech and instead doubled down on it, arguing the term jungle is an apt illustration of the lawlessness and disorder that currently rule world politics.”My reference to…
