London CNN — The coronation of King Charles III will take place on May 6 next year at Westminster Abbey in London, Buckingham Palace announced Tuesday. The service will be a more modern affair than previous royal coronations and will “look towards the future,” the palace said in a statement. It added that the occasion will still be “rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.” The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will conduct the ceremony, which will see Charles crowned alongside his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort. During the event, the King will be “anointed, blessed and consecrated” by the Archbishop…
Pediatricians should screen children as young as 8 for anxiety and kids 12 and older for depression during routine well checks, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said Tuesday. The recommendation from the independent panel of experts applies to children who aren’t showing any signs or symptoms of a mental health problem. Children who are — regardless of age — should be referred for specialized care, task force member Lori Pbert said.“We can’t not be screening children and teens,” said Pbert, a clinical psychologist and behavioral scientist. “We have to identify them early. We don’t want them struggling.”The health panel’s new guidance represents…
Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has denounced the European Union’s “double standards” and “tolerance” towards Turkey, arguing it emboldens Ankara to disregard international law and risks triggering a new conflict in the continent. In an interview with Euronews, Anastasiades harshly criticised Turkey’s actions and called out his fellow EU leaders for limiting their solidarity with Nicosia to just “words.”For Anastasiades, the EU’s multiple political and economic links with Turkey allow the country to retain its status of candidate to join the bloc, granting Ankara a sort of diplomatic shield.Turkey’s accession has gone through many diplomatic ups and downs and is today virtually frozen.”It is not…
Imagine stepping into a room that’s not much bigger than a large closet and instead of despising your landlord, you marvel at its compact beauty. An efficient use of space isn’t always a virtue, but it’s one of the most impressive features of the Caledonian Sleeper train, as I discovered on my journey from Edinburgh to London this year. In the compartments, beds are tucked beside sinks, there’s a pull-out desk beneath the basin, and a strong magnet draws toilet lids to the wall, which can be dropped down for showering. The new trains were billed as “hotels on wheels” when they launched…
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting more than 55 million people worldwide.Until recently, beta-amyloid plaques, common in those with Alzheimer’s, were generally thought to be responsible for the deterioration in cognitive function that is characteristic of the disorder. However, many people accumulate amyloid plaques in the brain as they age, but only some of these people go on to develop dementia.A new study has suggested that dementia symptoms may result not from the formation of insoluble plaques but from a lack of soluble amyloid beta protein. For more than 40 years, researchers have widely believed that Alzheimer’s disease…
The back-to-back, huge market rallies of last week may seem like a distant memory to investors after stocks slid for the past four days and finished mixed Tuesday. The Dow snapped its losing streak, rising more than 35 points, or 0.1%. It was a topsy-turvy trading session, with the Dow gaining more than 400 points at one point and falling as much as about 130 points earlier in the day. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended the day lower after briefly entering positive territory in midday trading. The S&P 500 slid 0.7% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 1.1%. It was…
Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, may have access to the royal vault, but she’s got a pretty impressive jewelry collection of her own, too. Evidence: the chunky 14-karat gold-plated chain by Laura Lombardi she wore on a visit to BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge on 10 October, which elevated her simple cream top, cream blazer and black trousers. The Princess appeared on the Newsbeat program alongside her husband, the Prince of Wales, where they heard from guests on World Mental Health Day. The statement necklace was something of a curveball compared to the more delicate jewelry she’s worn in the…
We’re well into fall, which means it’s two things: Spooky season and cozy season. Even if you’re not a fan of Halloween, who doesn’t love slipping into a comfy sweater on a crisp autumn day? While there are many more outfit options, bundling up in style is a real sartorial challenge. So allow Dua Lipa to offer some inspiration on how to do sleek layering properly, right down to her fashion-forward Uggs (yes, really). Now, Uggs get a bad rap: They’re associated with basic bitches who love PSLs (pumpkin spice lattes, for the uninitiated). But Lipa strayed from the pack and…
Photo: Courtesy Everett CollectionThe proof is in the pages of Vogue as well. The coverage has been sparse; the options are, well, lacking. In the May 1975 issue of Vogue, there was an ad for the leather label Hartmann and their six Halston-designed briefcases. They came in Halston’s patented Ultrasuede and colors like Bright Navy and Coffee Creme, as well as in “Hartmann’s legendary industrial belting leather.” A model in a herringbone blazer and a scarf around her neck modeled a sandy envelope iteration. She didn’t look particularly happy. In an article from February 2007, which pushes new-wave briefcases—a.k.a. luxury…
