The municipal cemetery of Tapachula in the Mexican state of Chiapas is a sprawling expanse overflowing with graves in colourful disrepair. Tombstones from centuries past crack and crumble, and the clutter is so extreme that, to reach certain parts of the graveyard, you must resign yourself to stepping on the dead. Some of the newer graves still host the remains of the Day of the Dead celebration in November – death being far more, well, lively in Mexico than in most other places on the planet. The country becomes awash in the cempasúchil flower – or Mexican marigold – and…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Most great athletes are motivated by something bigger than themselves. Their drive may come from an array of different things — money, fame, disrespect, upbringing, family, survival. The source of Isiah Pacheco’s drive is as unmistakable as it is unbreakable. The 23-year-old Chiefs rookie running back, who got to Kansas City and the AFC Championship game Sunday against the Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium by way of rural Vineland, N.J., and Rutgers, is driven by family tragedy. Pacheco’s youth was forever scarred by the loss of his brother and sister to murder in a span of less…

Josh Bailey remained optimistic Friday about being demoted to the Islanders’ fourth line, joking about how few games he had played with Matt Martin, but coach Lane Lambert didn’t mince words when pressed on why Bailey was dropped down in favor of Simon Holmstrom. “A result of us trying to find solutions to not winning hockey games,” Lambert said before the Islanders went out and won a hockey game, 2-0 over the Red Wings at UBS Arena. For a coach who has had zero interest this season in calling out individual players, that might be as close as Lambert ever…

BEIJING: The number of people making trips inside China over the week-long Chinese New Year holiday surged 74 per cent from last year after authorities scrapped COVID-19 curbs that had stifled travel for three years, media reported on Saturday (Jan 28). An estimated 226 million domestic trips were made by all means including plane during the holiday week that ended on Friday, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing government figures. That compares with about 130 million domestic trips during the holiday week last year, according to the transport ministry. In the last Chinese New Year holiday before the novel coronavirus emerged…

Editor’s Note: This article contains graphic descriptions of violence. CNN  —  The newly released videos of Tyre Nichols’ police beating captured the brutality that his family and authorities had already foreshadowed: He was punched and kicked while being restrained. He pleaded to go home and repeatedly yelled for his mom. And after the beating, while Nichols lay slumped and motionless against a car, officers walking around on scene ignored the 29-year-old. The videos consist of three shorter body camera clips and one roughly 31-minute video taken from a utility pole camera, which appears to capture most of the violence that…

On this day in history, Jan. 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger — scheduled for a routine launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida — exploded after just 73 seconds in flight, killing all seven Americans on board. The disaster shocked the nation — and led to an immediate pause in the space shuttle program. The cause of the disaster was found to be the failure of the primary and secondary redundant O-ring seals in a joint in the shuttle’s right solid rocket booster (SRB).ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, JAN. 27, 1943, US EIGHTH AIR FORCE LAUNCHES BOMBING OFFENSIVE OVER NAZI GERMANYWhile the…

From a remote field in Lincolnshire, teams of engineers are installing a high-voltage cable to carry electricity 765km to and from Denmark. The world’s longest “interconnector”, the Viking Link will pass under the North Sea and four nations’ waters, dodging unexploded bombs and pagan burial sites along the way. It will eventually have the capacity to supply energy to 1.4mn homes in the UK, or 2mn in Denmark where average consumption is lower. Interconnectors are crucial to Britain’s energy transition, in which the share produced from renewable sources has risen to 40 per cent from almost zero in 2010. But they…

In countries experiencing cold snaps, heating is a hot topic. What should one do when a boiler shrugs off its mortal coil? Rush to replace it? Or is it time to switch to a heat pump? That is a crucial question for households looking to save money on energy bills, and also for governments. In the UK, for example, 28mn homes together account for roughly 15 per cent of the country’s emissions. For the typical household, money will be the deciding factor. And if carbon were no issue, the boiler would still be the cheapest way to go, at least…
