India will overtake China this year to become the world’s most populous country. The likelihood of India passing that major milestone within a few months shot up Tuesday, when China reported that its population shrank in 2022 for the first time in more than 60 years. This shift will have significant economic implications for both Asian giants, which have more than 1.4 billion residents each. Along with the population data, China also reported one of its worst economic growth numbers in nearly half a century, underscoring the steep challenges the country faces as its labor force shrinks and the ranks…

JAKARTA: Families of Indonesian children who died because of tainted cough syrup demanded restitution as an Indonesian court on Tuesday (Jan 17) started hearing their class-action lawsuit against government agencies and pharmaceutical firms. About 200 children have died of acute kidney injury in Indonesia since last year and authorities have said two ingredients, ethylene glycol and diethyelene glycol, found in some syrup-based paracetamol medications are linked to the illness. The two ingredients are used in antifreeze, brake fluids and other industrial applications, but also as a cheaper alternative in some pharmaceutical products to glycerine, a solvent or thickening agent in…

TAIPEI: Taiwan’s military announced plans on Tuesday (Jan 17) to include women in its reservist training for the first time this year, as the island tries to bolster its forces against threats from China. Self-ruled, democratic Taiwan lives under the constant fear of a Chinese invasion, as Beijing claims the island a part of its territory to be taken one day, by force if necessary. China’s sabre-rattling has intensified in recent years under President Xi Jinping, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has further deepened worries in Taiwan that Beijing might move similarly. Taipei’s defence ministry said it would allow around 200…

The artwork – one of five original versions of the famous still life – was purchased by the predecessor of insurance firm Sompo Holdings at Christie’s in London for US$40 million, making it briefly the world’s most expensive painting. It has been on display in Tokyo at Sompo’s art museum for 35 years, but recently became the subject of a legal battle centred on a previous sale in Germany…
