US activist investor Jeff Ubben has called for Bayer to hire a new chief executive from outside its management ranks as his investment fund on Monday announced a stake in the German pharmaceuticals and crop science conglomerate. Bayer has suffered from litigation over its weedkiller Roundup and years of shareholder discontent. Ubben’s more than €400mn stake, held through his firm Inclusive Capital Partners, amounts to 0.83 per cent of the company, the San Francisco-based firm said on Monday. A man who was seen on surveillance video last week shooting and killing an armed suspect attempting to rob a Houston taqueria was questioned by police Monday. Houston police detectives questioned the 46-year-old man and, after consultation with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, it was determined the shooting will be referred to a grand jury, police said. The man’s identity has not been released because he has not been arrested or charged, police said. A federal agency is considering a ban on gas stoves as concerns about indoor pollution linked to childhood asthma rise, Bloomberg first reported. A US Consumer Product Safety commissioner told Bloomberg gas stove usage is a “hidden hazard.” “Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned,” agency commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. said in a Bloomberg interview.
