Rep.-elect George Santos’ sister reportedly skipped years of rent on the Queens apartment the siblings once shared — but managed in that time to still dish out tens of thousands of dollars in political contributions, including $5,000 to her lying brother’s campaign. Court records show that Tiffany Santos is facing eviction from the Elmhurst apartment for failing to pay nearly $40,000 in rent since August 2020, the Daily Beast first reported on Thursday. She reportedly owes the massive sum, despite receiving more than $30,000 in federal emergency rental assistance, paid directly to her landlords.  Tiffany Santos’ lease was terminated by…

The United States has resumed full immigrant visa services at its embassy in Cuba’s capital, five years after Washington closed consular services in Havana due to a spate of unexplained health incidents. In a statement last week, the embassy confirmed that it would begin processing immigrant visas on Wednesday, including permits for Cubans reuniting with family in the US and others chosen through the diversity visa lottery. Since 2017, many Cubans have been forced to travel to third countries – notably Guyana in South America – to submit US visa requests. “Everything went very fast,” said Melissa Vazquez, 18, after…

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued a dramatic call to the American people to protect and defend four universal human ideals in his State of the Union address on this day in history, Jan. 6, 1941. The speech came amid the frightening and seemingly unstoppable march of military tyranny around the world. Now known as the Four Freedoms speech, FDR’s remarks that day served as a spiritual call to arms for the American people who, before the year was out, would be thrust violently into World War II.  ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, JAN. 5, 1933, CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE AMID…

CNN  —  Kevin McCarthy is the latest Republican leader to find out that it’s impossible to get ahead of his party’s inexorable march to its far-right extremes. The Californian, who has lost a stunning 11 consecutive House roll call votes in his bid to become speaker, was the first major GOP leader to embrace ex-President Donald Trump after the January 6, 2021, insurrection. But on Friday’s two-year anniversary of the worst attack on American democracy in the modern era, he’s finding out that even that supposedly career-enhancing bet is insufficient to unlock the votes of Trump’s heirs in the chaos…

Google Search was once one of the wonders of the online world. Its clean, organised pages of results filtered the otherwise unmanageable slog of information on the internet. That was until it became cluttered with adverts. Now the world’s biggest search engine is less encyclopedia, more Yellow Pages. Look up a search term that can also be a product — asthma inhalers, for example — and you will need to scroll past up to four large adverts before reaching non-sponsored results. Search for clothing and the entire first page will be companies hoping to make a sale. Even non-ad results…

Björn Rosengren took the reins at ABB in March 2020 with a mandate to shake up the Swiss industrial group after years of underperformance. Events — a global pandemic, production shutdowns in key markets and an economic downturn — may have proved an additional challenge but have done little to slow him down. Almost three years on, the 63-year-old Swede has unpicked ABB’s highly centralised corporate structure and parted with most, if not all, non-core businesses. ABB’s four strategic divisions — electrification, motion, process automation and robotics — have been broken down into 20 autonomous businesses. Along the way, ABB’s…

Talking to leaders these days in any walk of life, I have a sense that people are frozen. They see that inflation is back in a serious way for the first time in decades, forcing central banks to raise interest rates at the fastest pace since the early 1980s. They understand that this sudden change in the price of money — the most important driver of economic and financial behaviour — marks a fundamental break with the past. But they are not acting. After living with easy money for so long, they find it difficult even to contemplate a different…
