The European Union has moved a step closer to allowing Kosovo passport holders to enter the bloc without visa requirements.Under draft laws, Kosovar citizens could soon travel to the EU without a visa for a period of stay of 90 days over a six-month period.Among western Balkan countries, only Kosovo citizens must currently apply for a permit to visit, study, or receive medical care in the EU and the Schengen area.Indeed, Kosovo remains the only country in continental Europe besides Russia and Belarus outside the EU’s visa-free regime.Activists have told Euronews that the requirements are “unjust” and “a very politicised…
London CNN — Residents of an apartment complex that sits on a historic parcel of land opposite the Tower of London want Britain’s King Charles to buy it back, claiming that its current owner, China, will turn it into a hub for shadowy diplomatic activity. The British monarchy sold Royal Mint Court, a 5.4-acre plot that was once home to the facility that manufactured Britain’s coinage, to a property company in 2010. Beijing bought the site in 2018, and now plans to invest several hundreds of millions of dollars transforming it into its new embassy in the United Kingdom. The…
The European Commission recommended on Wednesday that €7.5 billion of EU funds be withheld from Hungary over rule of law concerns.Budapest had until November 19 to pass 17 reforms negotiated with the EU’s executive over the summer in order to avoid the freeze threatened by Brussels as part of its rule of law mechanism.”While a number of reforms have been undertaken or are underway, Hungary failed to adequately implement central aspects of the necessary 17 remedial measures…as it had committed to,” the Commission said.”As a result, the Commission has decided to maintain its initial proposal of 18 September to suspend…
Two independent studies investigated the effect of pain-relieving corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid knee joint injections on the progression of knee osteoarthritis. Both studies found that corticosteroid knee injections were associated with increased progression of knee osteoarthritis compared to controls and to hyaluronic acid injections. These findings imply that corticosteroid knee injections must be administered with caution and that hyaluronic acid injections may be safer.Osteoarthritis is a condition that develops when the protective cartilage in joints wears down, causing the bones to rub against each other. This condition frequently affects the knee. Typical symptoms of knee osteoarthritis are pain during physical activity, restricted…
The opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not represent in any way the editorial position of Euronews. In Europe, we live in a linear economy. It’s a traditional model we’re all accustomed to where we take, make and create waste.Raw materials are collected and transformed into products consumers use, until we eventually discard them, unaware (or perhaps blissfully ignorant) of the damage being done to the environment.Let’s face it, we’re addicted to novelty, whether it’s clothes, that new bit of tech or an upgraded kitchen appliance, we can’t resist a sale.An estimated 6.6 million tons…
Teacher shortages are concerning countries across Europe, AFP reports. France, Germany, Portugal, Sweden and Italy are all facing teacher recruitment troubles amid widespread disaffection within the profession, which has been amplified by COVID. There will be a shortfall of 25,000 teachers in Germany by 2025 and 30,000 in Portugal by 2030, according to national estimates, while there are currently 4,000 vacant teaching posts in France. For Eric Charbonnier, an education expert at the OECD, the COVID pandemic gave “visibility” to the teaching profession and highlighted issues around its appeal. But others have offered different explanations. Régis Malet, professor of education at the University of Bordeaux, said…
Bakhmut, Ukraine CNN — In a basement in eastern Ukraine, young men sit at a long table strewn with laptops, their eyes glued to a television screen an arm’s length away. They watch black figures on a bleak winter hilltop, which appear to panic, then run across the frame. It’s a live video feed from a small Ukrainian drone several miles away – a spotter for artillery teams trying to kill Russian soldiers in their trenches. Plumes of smoke rise from the near misses of Ukrainian salvos. All along the eastern frontlines, in basement command centers hidden behind unmarked metal…

Maria Kolesnikova was taken to a hospital in the southeastern city of Gomel, placed in a surgical ward and later transferred to the intensive care unit, Gleb Germanchuk, a spokesman for Kolesnikova, told CNN. She is in a stable but “difficult state, with some improvement,” he said. Kolesnikova was placed in a “punishment cell” prior to her hospitalization for not being at her prison…
International scientists are warning that the irreversible thawing of permafrost due to climate change could lead to a new public health threat. In an article posted to the preprint repository bioRxiv – which has yet to be peer-reviewed – the French, Russian and German researchers said they had revived and uncovered 13 new “zombie viruses” isolated from seven different ancient Siberian permafrost samples. One virus had been dormant and frozen underwater for nearly 50,000 years. The authors found that the pathogens remain infectious after tens of thousands of years.
