CNN — Gaps in fencing along the US-Mexico border can be a dramatic – and sometimes puzzling – sight. Miles of tall steel bollards end abruptly, giving way to open space or much smaller barriers that are designed to block vehicles from crossing, but not people. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey says he got tired of waiting for federal authorities to fill in the holes. Crews at his direction started stacking shipping containers along portions of the border in August. Now the Bureau of Reclamation is asking the state to remove them – a request that Ducey’s office calls “unacceptable.” Meanwhile,…

Despite declining cancer death rates, there are still some cancers for which we do not have effective treatments.Researchers’ understanding of the genetic mechanisms underpinning cancer has allowed them to develop effective and increasingly precise treatments. Some mechanisms are more fundamental to the cell machinery than others and have been harder to target. A phase I safety trial has reported positive results for a new drug candidate that inhibits the notoriously difficult-to-target Myc protein, thought to play a role in most cancers. Cancer death rates have been declining for the past 20 years, dropping by 27% between 2001 and 2020 in…
European companies face a dilemma over their hybrid bonds, as sky-high interest rates make businesses wary of dipping back into the €175mn market.Borrowers are expected to repay about €11bn in these instruments — which are considered part equity and part debt by rating agencies — in the coming six months. Typically they would do just that — handing money back to investors in a process known as calling, and then borrowing fresh funds to replace it. In theory, companies can just leave the debt in investors’ hands. This option has rarely been used by companies, because they hope to keep…

Park guests who were inside the building where the snakes are located were evacuated. The zoo later assessed that there was no general risk for employees or guests and the rest of the zoo remained open.INCOMING…

Go beyond the box score with the Bombers Sign up for Inside the Yankees by Dan Martin, exclusively on Sports+. For a team that came within one playoff round of getting to the World Series, the Yankees could look significantly different next season. No, Aaron Boone isn’t going anywhere after Hal Steinbrenner told the Associated Press on Wednesday that the Yankees manager would be back, and all indications are Brian Cashman will be back as general manager. But regardless of who’s in charge, the lopsided loss to the Astros in the ALCS has created a storm of uncertainty around the…
We’re big fans of M&G’s Bond Vigilantes blog, so we asked Andrew Eve, an investment specialist on their fixed income team, if we could have an early run at their regular Halloween round-up of the scariest charts in finance. With runaway inflation around the world, this has been a spooky year for for bond investors. But 2022 has also made fixed income investing much more interesting, and meant that we had no shortage of unnerving charts either. After years of low, rangebound bond yields, markets have finally escaped the zero bound — in the case of the German 10-year yield, going…
Mirror reader Hayley Miller is sick of listening to broadcasters ‘talking rubbish and stating the obvious’. What do YOU think?Like many, I find myself constantly irritated by the commentators and pundits on live football who continually talk rubbish and state the obvious. Is it too much to ask to have the option to mute them while leaving the crowd noise for atmosphere? Surely, these days we have the technology to do this? Harry Miller, New Addington, Surrey THE MIRROR WRITES: Many have long-argued for the ability to turn off commentary when watching football on the television – and the technology…
