President Trump ensured Long Island opera star Christopher Macchio performed at the nation’s 250th birthday concert in storm-battered DC.
Macchio, known as “America’s Tenor,” was set to sing on the National Mall after torrential rain and wind had already cancelled performances from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gene Simmons and CeeLo Green, according to The Post.
The White House reached out to Macchio directly, saying “we’re on our way” and making it clear they would get him on stage, he said.
Macchio sang the “Star Spangled Banner” at Trump’s second inauguration and performed classics like “Ave Maria” and “Nessun Dorma” at the concert, which he said was fitting for the occasion.
He had the crowd accompany his rendition of “God Bless America” and said “you felt the patriotism in the air — you felt the sense of history and gravity”.
Trump personally called Macchio the next day to thank him, saying “I loved it most of all” and that he was pleased with the event’s organisation, Macchio said.
Macchio got engaged to fiancée Sanaz just days before the concert and said “these have been the best two weeks of my life”.
Trump has previously told Macchio he has “the greatest voice I’ve ever heard” and often asks if he thinks he’s as good as Luciano Pavarotti, Macchio said.
As the US looks to the future, Macchio’s performance will be remembered as a highlight of the 250th birthday celebrations, with the singer set to continue performing at high-profile events, according to Fox host Brett Baier.
