Starling Marte, in what was a large surprise, pronounced himself healthy enough to hit and play the field for the Mets.  After an impressive playoff performance with a fractured middle finger, Marte might be asked next if he can pitch, too.  Marte, who missed 4 ½ weeks after a fastball drilled his finger, returned Friday night with two singles, two stolen bases and a nice running grab in the Mets’ 7-1 loss to the Padres in Game 1 of their NL wild-card series at Citi Field.  The Mets gave Marte, who had been considered a long shot just to make…

Starling Marte is not the only question-riddled righty slugger with a sky-high ceiling the Mets are trusting for the postseason.  Five major league games was all Francisco Alvarez required to prove to the club he belonged on the playoff roster.  The 20-year-old was carried as a third catcher and a bat off the bench. He was manager Buck Showalter’s first righty pinch-hitter Friday when, with runners on the corners against Padres righty Luis Garcia, Alvarez struck out in the ninth inning to end the 7-1 loss at Citi Field.  Alvarez could be the starting designated hitter for Saturday’s game against…

The bubble gusher that appeared in the Baltic Sea after the rupture of the Nord Stream pipelines has subsided. Conspiracy theories over the cause of the damage are still simmering. This week, Swedish police investigating the leaks in Nord Stream 1 and 2 found evidence of detonations. That strengthened the already strong belief that the damage resulted from deliberate acts of sabotage. Russia has denied responsibility, pushing the theory that the US and its allies caused the damage. Blaming the US for a cloak-and-dagger plot is a familiar Kremlin trope.Regardless of who carried out the sabotage that punctured three of…

CNN  —  Truth, the saying goes, is the first casualty in war. Nowhere is that more true than in Russia, where the Kremlin has engaged in a campaign of false advertising to sell its invasion of Ukraine to the public. Russian President Vladimir Putin cast the campaign as a “special military operation” – not a war – and told citizens that they could, essentially, forget about the conflict in Ukraine. Draftees, he promised falsely, would not fight, and military operations would be left to the professionals. And Putin’s Ministry of Defense delivered platitudes about progress on the battlefield, talking points…
