SEOUL: South Koreans flocked to memorials on Monday (Oct 31) honouring the more than 150 people killed in a crowd surge at Halloween celebrations, as authorities faced accusations that lax crowd control had caused the disaster. Officials said the death toll had risen overnight to 154 with 149 injured, 33 of them in serious condition. Citizens from at least two dozen countries were among the dead. Mourners wept, prayed and placed flowers at a huge official altar set up in central Seoul for victims – mostly young women – of the Saturday crush, with many railing against authorities’ failures to prevent…
Good morning and happy Halloween. Regular readers will know that Unhedged is not particularly bullish. The six-word summary: recession likely, not enough priced in. Most people, or rather most of the people we read and talk to, seem to be equally spooked (to use the seasonally appropriate term). Indeed, a question we have written about before and will have to do again before long is “if everyone is really so bearish, why isn’t the market lower?”Remarkably, even last week’s big scary tech sell-off could not bring the October recovery to an end. The market is pretty smart most of the…

CLEVELAND — The Knicks left home Thursday riding a three-game winning streak and they returned Sunday night licking their wounds after two doses of reality. Facing two of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, the Bucks and the Cavaliers, revealed just how far they have to go in the early part of the season. A one-sided, 11-point loss on Friday night in Milwaukee was followed by a fourth-quarter collapse on Sunday in Cleveland, resulting in a winless trip in which Giannis Antetokounmpo and Donovan Mitchell had their way with the Knicks. “We have a lot of room for improvement,”…
Four Michigan State University football players were suspended from the team after they appeared to have been involved in an off-field altercation with a rival, the institution said Sunday. The suspension was ordered after school officials looked at video from Saturday’s 29-7 loss in Ann Arbor against home team Michigan and discovered the four were part of a group of teammates surrounding the rival, Michigan State coach Mel Tucker said in a statement.Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh alleged during the postgame news conference that 10 Michigan State players were part of a group in which people grabbed, pushed and assaulted a single…
TEMPE, Ariz. — If the substantial number of Rangers fans in attendance didn’t make the club’s first experience at Mullett Arena one to remember, the rambunctious atmosphere and back-to-college feel of the building certainly did. The intimacy of the lower bowl was palpable. There were jerseys from all walks of life to be seen. It felt like a melting pot of hockey’s rowdiest traditions. “I have no words, I really don’t,” K’Andre Miller said with a laugh. “I’ve been trying to figure out what I just played. I don’t know. It was a weird game. You see the guys in…
CNN — America’s toxic politics quickly turned the brutal attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband into the latest vicious partisan fight – even before the full facts are known. Police have yet to ascribe a motive to the attack on Paul Pelosi, 82, after a man broke into the couple’s home in San Francisco. They have said the alleged assailant was intentional about going to the house, and he shouted out, “Where is Nancy?” CNN has reported. Eight days before critical midterm elections, the intense political reaction has already outraced the investigation. Republicans, while condemning the violence, are denying…
