CNN — The first piece of modern federal legislation to address the infrastructure of voting systems across the country, known as Help America Vote Act, celebrates its 20th anniversary on Saturday. HAVA was created on a bipartisan basis after the 2000 presidential election, which was decided by the Supreme Court after razor thin margins revealed the need to address antiquated voting systems. As Congress has become more partisan, funding for HAVA has significantly decreased. Less than two weeks before the country faces its first midterm election since the 2020 presidential race, where former President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede and…

With eight weeks of the college football season in the books, Week 9 presents the last opportunity for teams to prove they belong in the College Football Playoff picture. On Tuesday, the CFP committee will release its first playoffs rankings of the season that will no doubt set off arguments around the country. Inevitably, there will be shouts of an SEC bias, and at least one school will feel slighted by where it lands.ALABAMA’S JERMAINE BURTON BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT AS NEW VIDEO OF TENNESSEE INCIDENT SURFACESBut that’s not for another few days. There’s something about the human condition that often leads us to compare something we’ve just experienced to what’s familiar from our past. Whether we’re discovering a new food (“This tastes just like chicken.”), a new location (“This reminds me of home.”) or meeting someone new (“A lot nicer than my ex.”).The desire to find comparisons that help us better understand the present is strong. For next weekend’s Breeders’ Cup in Lexington, Kentucky, an imposing 4-year-old named Flightline is the one horse fans have seen too little of but want to experience with the belief he’ll deliver another amazing performance worthy of…

NEW DELHI: India has extended curbs on sugar exports by one year until October 2023, the government said, but the world’s biggest producer of the sweetener is still expected to fix a quota for this year’s overseas sales. India, also the world’s biggest sugar consumer, this year restricted exports through to the end of this month to contain a rise in domestic prices following record exports. “The notification merely extends the government’s policy of keeping sugar exports in the restricted category, but this decision does not mean that the government will not allow sugar exports in 2022/23,” Prakash Naiknavare, managing…
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Jalen Brunson accepted blame after his worst performance as a Knick. The new point guard, who had performed so well over his first four games, was held to 13 points and two assists in the Knicks’ 119-108 loss to the Bucks on Friday night. “We started out really slow. A lot of that’s on me,” Brunson said. “I’ve got to do a better job with just coming out and attacking, being who I am. I take full [blame] for that. I’ve got to come out with the intensity and tenacity like I usually do.” Brunson, hounded by…
Far-right incumbent Bolsonaro and left-wing ex-president Lula trade blows ahead of the presidential run-off vote on Sunday.Incumbent Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and his left-wing challenger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have faced off in their final televised debate ahead of Sunday’s tense run-off vote. Polls suggest Lula is the slight favourite to come back for a third term, capping a remarkable political renaissance after his jailing on corruption convictions that were overturned. But Bolsonaro outperformed opinion polls in the first-round vote this month, and many analysts say the election could go either way. During Friday’s free-wheeling debate, the deeply polarising…
