“Up until now, 90 per cent of our visitors and 90 per cent of our revenue comes from China … We basically are a hub to attract mainland Chinese gamblers,” Macao-based gaming analyst Ben Lee told AFP. “So the Macao government is obviously being pushed to try and redirect the industry away from China.” Until recently, the renewal of concessions seemed like a done deal for the six companies permitted to operate casinos, which include the subsidiaries of three Las Vegas giants – Sands China, MGM China and Wynn Macau. But at the last minute, a surprise contender, Malaysia’s Genting…

Far-right Bolsonaro has questioned Brazil’s electronic voting system, raising concerns he plans to contest results.Brazil’s presidential frontrunner Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has said he hopes his far-right rival, incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro, will accept an election loss, as Brazilian voters prepare to head to the polls in less than a week. Lula said during a news conference in Sao Paulo on Monday that if he were to win the tightly fought contest, he hoped Bolsonaro “will have a moment of sanity and phone me to accept the election result”. “If Bolsonaro loses and he wants to cry … I…
It took 11 tries and until the third quarter of the third game, but RJ Barrett finally got off the 3-point schneid on Monday night. Barrett knocked down three second-half 3-pointers and scored 18 of his 20 points after the break to help the Knicks knock off the Magic, 115-102, at the Garden. “It was going to have to happen eventually,” said Barrett, who had a team-best, plus-22 rating in 38 minutes. “I work on them all the time. My teammates are with me, the whole staff is with me, so when they’re there I gotta shoot them.” Despite shooting…
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were served their worst loss of the early NFL season, a 21-3 rout by the lowly Carolina Panthers, that has everyone questioning whether future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady will call it quits midseason. Think again. In his latest “Let’s Go!” podcast, Brady was asked by Jim Gray if he still has a love for the game. He looked pretty dejected the last couple weeks as the Bucs have trouble winning, and the offense has been to blame for that. Brady didn’t hesitate with his answer. “Absolutely,” he said. “I was saying to [his trainer Alex Guerrero] this…

Kamikaze suicide planes sent by desperate Imperial Japan screamed down from the skies over Surigao Strait in the Philippines, terrifying American sailors, for the first time on this day in history, Oct. 25, 1944. “The Americans who witnessed these first kamikaze attacks were horrified and shaken, but it was only the beginning,” historian James P. Duffy wrote last year for American Heritage magazine, in a passage adapted from his recent book, “Return to Victory.”By the end of World War II in the summer of 1945, about 130 American warships were sunk or damaged by kamikazes, according to several military history sources. CNN — President Joe Biden is in a bind. He has no choice but to talk about the economy in the home stretch of the midterm elections – it’s the issue, given near 40-year high inflation and high gas prices, that worries voters most. But by doing so, he’s drawing attention to his own and Democrats’ biggest liability – their failure to fix things already and accusations that they made it worse. There’s no terrain on which Republicans would rather fight as they stage a referendum on Biden’s presidency and try to inflict the traditional first-term curse on a new…
Temporary restraining order sought against group linked to voter intimidation allegations in Arizona
CNN — An association for retirees and an organization for Latino voters are seeking a temporary restraining order against a group they allege is coordinating a campaign of voter intimidation in Arizona. The restraining order request was filed Monday evening with a federal court lawsuit alleging that the group Clean Elections USA and its founder, Melody Jennings, were running afoul of federal law with incidents near ballot drop box locations in Arizona. The lawsuit accuses the defendants of a “coordinated campaign of vigilante voter intimidation” in violation of the Voting Rights Act and federal civil rights law. Clean Elections USA…
