A young Seattle Seahawks fan experienced a moment of pure disbelief this week, his pre-game excitement building to an “oh my God” exclamation. As the NFL season kicked off, former USC star Sam Darnold delivered an unforgettable memory, a small kindness before a much larger test.
The scene unfolded as Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba approached the young supporter, signing his football. This left the fan exclaiming “oh my God,” according to reports. Just as the ink dried, quarterback Darnold, 29, unexpectedly appeared, adding his own signature to the same ball, prompting the fan to repeat “oh my God” two more times.
This gesture came from a player on a remarkable journey. Darnold, a former Rose Bowl winner, is now a Super Bowl-winning quarterback, leading the Seattle Seahawks. He signed a lucrative three-year, $100.5 million contract with the club in 2025, following a significant comeback season with the Vikings in 2024.
Yet, amidst this personal triumph, a long-standing challenge looms large for the ninth-season NFL veteran. Darnold is set to face the New England Patriots on Wednesday night for a week 1 matchup, the very team his Seahawks played in Super Bowl 60 last February.
Despite his recent Super Bowl victory, Darnold holds a stark regular season record against the Patriots. Since being selected by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft, he has gone 0-4 in regular season encounters, managing only one touchdown pass against nine interceptions.
His NFL career has been a series of peaks and troughs, once cast aside as a backup. Now, with a fresh contract and a Super Bowl ring, Darnold and the Seahawks aim to turn the page, hoping to finally conquer this particular, long-standing adversary in the regular season.
