LeBron James is treating the NBA free agency market like a leisure trip. While general managers sweat over spreadsheets, the 41-year-old star is spending his summer playing golf with Draymond Green.
Rich Paul has confirmed that there is no fixed date for a decision. Speaking on the Game Over podcast with Max Kellerman, Paul said he has left James alone to evaluate his options for a 24th NBA season.
“There is none. I wish I knew,” Paul said when asked about a specific timeline. He noted that James understands the situation and will notify him when he is ready.
The power dynamic has shifted since James’ previous free agency turns in 2010, 2014 and 2018. He is no longer expected to demand a max contract or force teams to clear massive cap space, according to the New York Post.
Instead, the choice rests on fit and what Paul described as “complete happiness.” This makes James a luxury addition rather than a structural burden for teams already built for contention.
Shams Charania of ESPN reported that suitors are sending voice notes to Paul to be forwarded to James. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Philadelphia 76ers are all linked to the four-time MVP.
The options offer different lures. Cleveland provides a storybook homecoming, while Miami offers familiarity. Philadelphia has become a wild card after adding Jaylen Brown to a core featuring Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
The Timberwolves have a young core around Anthony Edwards that needs veteran stability. Meanwhile, Paul suggested the Golden State Warriors are the team “you definitely don’t want to play” in a playoff series.
James remains a potent force despite his age. He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds last season, proving he can still tilt high-level games in his favour.
The league remains in a holding pattern until the star decides his final destination. All eyes now turn to the start of training camps this October to see where the veteran finally lands.
