Aviation Consultant Dr Peter Bates has discussed with Sky News Australia the Qantas flight from New Zealand to Sydney which made a mayday call following a reported engine failure – which he says is “standard procedure”.
Qantas flight QF144 has landed at Sydney Airport.
“The crew are highly competent, and they’re trained in this at least four times a year so this would have been a standard procedure although it’s a non-standard event,” Dr Bates said.
“If it was an engine failure, they would have contained the engine, carried out the checklist then selected a more appropriate altitude for them to fly and then they would then notify air traffic control.
“They use the term ‘mayday’.”
Dr Bates also commended the crew of the Qantas flight.
