ACU Senior Research Fellow Kevin Donnelly has discussed the recent NAPLAN results, which show literacy rates among year nine boys have fallen to the lowest level since testing began.
“It doesn’t surprise me that boys are disadvantaged compared to girls, especially year nine with reading. And that’s been happening for many years now,” he told Sky News Australia.
“I was involved in a national inquiry into boys’ education some years ago under Brendan Nelson when he was the Commonwealth minister, and we knew back then that what is happening in the classroom, the way teachers teach, the resources being used, especially in English, actually disadvantage boys.
“And that’s why we have the problem now.”
