Lismore MP Janelle Saffin says the buyback program from the government “gives people choice – and it gives them clarity, and it gives them that safety”.
Thousands of homeowners in the most flood-prone areas of northern NSW will be eligible to raise, repair, retrofit, or even sell their homes to the government under a new major buyback program worth $800 million.
“The next step will be how we live with our flood plains when we have some retreat from it, what do we do to make it still livable right across our community,” she told Sky News Australia.
Ms Saffin said none of the flood damage in Lismore will be “fixed overnight”.
“This wasn’t a flood, it was beyond a flood, it was like an in-land Tsunami that came through our area and hit us,” she said.
