Wayne Rooney has expressed concerns that England’s celebrations following their victory over Mexico may be premature. Footage emerged of the team dancing in the dressing room after overcoming altitude sickness, a hostile crowd, and playing 40 minutes with 10 men to reach the quarter-finals.
Rooney appeared unimpressed when shown footage of the post-match celebrations, which included John Stones tricking Thomas Tuchel into thinking he had a shoulder injury. Tuchel himself joined in the dancing, but Rooney told the BBC: “I’m a bit more old school. After you win anything I know you’ve got to enjoy it. But I think it’s a bit too soon.”
Former Chelsea star Cesar Azpilicueta disagreed with Rooney’s assessment, saying: “As a player when you have had these kinds of games against a host, this atmosphere, you have to enjoy it. Life is about balance. Football is about balance. You have to enjoy it. Now they will recover and be ready for another game.”
England captain Harry Kane acknowledged that the squad will have to ‘calm down’ following the emotionally-draining win at Mexico City’s iconic Estadio Azteca. “The connection with everyone is even stronger now and we feel that more than ever,” he said. “We recover now, we calm down, we have a couple of days relaxing and then obviously get prepared for a massive quarter-final.”
