England midfielder Jordan Henderson’s 2026 World Cup campaign was abruptly cut short on Sunday night following a bizarre accident.
The 36-year-old, who remained on the bench during England’s 3-2 victory, sustained an injury after falling over an advertising board, leaving him in considerable pain amidst the team’s celebrations.
On Monday, Henderson made the decision to undergo surgery, bringing an unexpected end to the tournament for one of England’s seasoned leaders.
The incident occurred as Henderson attempted to clamber over a pitch-side advertising hoarding to celebrate with the travelling supporters, while Oasis music blared from the stadium speakers. He lost his footing, landing awkwardly on his wrist.
England captain Harry Kane commented on Henderson’s injury on Sunday evening following the match.
“Yeah Hendo just fell over there. I think he’s OK. Something to do with his arm,” Kane stated, at the time unaware of the full extent of Henderson’s injury.
The celebratory mood quickly shifted to concern as medical personnel rushed onto the field, administered oxygen, and stretchered Henderson off the pitch.
