A high-risk sex offender died at a Brooklyn psychiatric facility this week — and authorities believe he may have been killed in a fight with a fellow patient, cops said Friday.
Level 3 offender Shakim Devega, 28, was found unconscious and unresponsive — with trauma to his neck — inside the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center on Clarkson Avenue near Albany Avenue in Crown Heights around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
Investigators believe he was involved in a dispute with another male who was also staying at the facility, cops said.
He was pronounced dead at the Kings County Hospital Center, authorities said.
While the city Medical Examiner’s Office has not made an official ruling on the manner of death, police say the office did find neck fractures and saw signs of foul play.
The NYPD is investigating the case as a homicide.
Devega sexually abused a 6-year-old boy in 2018, according to the state sex offender registry.
He was convicted of first-degree attempted sexual abuse in 2019, according to the registry and state corrections records.
He was sentenced to 42 months in state prison, and was released on parole last year, the corrections records show.
His post-release supervision was set to expire in 2026.
He was also paroled in 2016 after serving over a year on a first-degree attempted robbery conviction, the records show.
